Caterpillar is an American based company with a wide range of products and services. It is the world’s largest manufacturer of construction and mining equipments, natural gas and diesel engines, industrial gas turbines and locomotives. It was ranked #59 in the Fortune 500 list in 2016. The company is divided into 3 departments, construction industries, resource industries and energy and transportation. The Caterpillar machinery and merchandise is unmistakably recognizable by its trademark "Caterpillar Yellow" livery and the "CAT" logo.
The formation of this company can be traced back to the 1925 merger of Holt Manufacturing Company and the C. L. Best Tractor Company, establishing an entirely different entity, the Caterpillar Tractor Company. The re-organized itself as a Delaware corporation under the name Caterpillar Inc.
During the 1890s and 1900s, the tractors and mining equipment were more of a burden than a blessing. They were overweight and used to sink into soft earth. After cleverly solving this problem, Benjamin Holt successfully tested his first Holt Steamer Number 77. The company photographer observed it as a crawling caterpillar, and this is where it got its name.
