Mitsubishi
Mitsubishi Motors Corporation is a Japanese based automotive giant whose origins can be traced back to 1917 when they introduced the Mitsubishi Model A, Japan's first series-production automobile, a completely hand crafted seven seater sedan. A merger of Mitsubishi Shipbuilding and Mitsubishi Aircraft Co. created Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in 1934. Since 2016, Nissan acquired 34% of the ownership and thus landing it in the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance 2020.
The name "Mitsubishi" refers to the three-diamond emblem. "Mitsubishi" is derived from the words ‘mitsu’ and ‘hishi’. Prior meaning three, latter meaning water chestnut. Japanese often bend the "h" sound to a "b" sound when it occurs in the middle of a word, therefore, Mitsubishi.
Yataro Iwasaki, the founder of the original Mitsubishi organization, chose the three-diamond mark as it is suggestive of the three-leaf crest of the Tosa Clan, and also of the three stacked rhombuses of the Iwasaki family crest. The red color representing the thrill and pleasure which is a part of possessing a Mitsubishi vehicle.
Mitsubishi also has a reputable background in motorsports dominating multiple tracks in different classes and categories beginning 1962 Macau Grand Prix with the Mitsubishi 500 Super Deluxe. Ralliart was a subsidiary solely for off-road motorsport up till 2010.
Mitsubishi’s 100 years history is incomplete with the rally king, the street monster, Lancer Evolution, with the first model introduced in 1993. The ’95 EVO III accumulated a record four consecutive victories at the rally from 1996 to 1999.
